Undoubtedly, the Cycladic islands are among our favorite destinations for family summer holidays. Why, you may ask? Easy to answer: these wonderful islands are gifted with breathtaking scenery, perfect climate, friendly locals and delicious cuisine. After Folegandros and Naxos in 2016, we chose to visit Ios and Sifnos in August 2017 due to their proximity to Santorini, our airport of arrival.
Ios: Dionysos Seaside Resort
Ios is full of surprises. It is a lesser-known island in the Cyclades, yet it has plenty to offer like sumptuous and well-organized beaches, great hotels and luscious restaurants/tavernas.
The Dionysos Seaside Resort has a direct access to the most beautiful beach on the island: Mylopotas. After a few minutes upon arrival, and thanks to the lovely and laid-back welcome of the staff, one feels immediately on vacation.
The bar and the restaurant have been completely renovated in 2014 and the architects/designers have chosen white and wood furniture, rattan lamps and bright colored cushions for a natural and energetic atmosphere. The accommodations are simple but large in size and very functional. We absolutely loved this hotel and can’t wait to go back.
My tip: The local bus network is so good you don’t need to rent a car.

Sifnos: Verina Astra
After Ios, Sifnos seemed fancier but also more crowded! When we arrived, there was a big street party in the 2 main villages Artemonas and Appolonia and ALL restaurants were fully packed! Contrarily to Ios, we have not been impressed with the beaches but on the other hand, there are plenty of beautiful villages to visit and the local handicrafts, especially the ceramics, are gorgeous!
See the breathtaking views? Are you speechless, too? The infinity pool blending with the blue horizon is just incredible. Verina Astra is very intimate and consists of 7 Cycladic style maisonettes, each with an outdoor lounge, a large terrace and… an outdoor shower (of course there is also a shower inside !)! Our suite could fit 2 adults and 2 teens and the interior layout deserved to be featured in a decoration magazine.
My tips: Don’t miss a single à la carte breakfast, they are amazing! Rent a car, the hotel is quite isolated.

Santorini: Bellonias Villas
Santorini, baby! This was our 4th time on the island. Talk about addicted travelers! After 2 stays in hotels overlooking the Caldera, we decided to give a try to the other side of the island and its black sandy beaches. Kamari is a bustling village with a pedestrian promenade lined with restaurants/taverns on the sea-side and small friendly hotels on the other side.
The Bellonias Villas is a hip hotel. But not only. I have seen too many trendy hotels with bad service so I need to insist that everything was very professional there, from the warm welcome of the staff upon arrival, the delish restaurant’s food, the artistic decoration of the rooms, and I could go on and on! Even in high season, there is always lots of space to sunbathe at the pool or on the beautifully landscaped private beach. Did I say we went there twice and, each time, didn’t want to leave?
My tips: VERY early booking recommended for high season! Ask for a room on the upper level (rooms on the lower level can be a bit dark).
