Meraki, the prettiest Café in the Western Cape, South Africa

I went three times to South Africa and, each time, Capetown was on my itinerary; I have a very special relationship with this gorgeous city and I even dream sometimes of retiring there when I am older! Stellenbosch, where Meraki Café is located, is a very charming town in the Winelands, about 45 minutes by car from Capetown. It has a strong European feeling with its typical Dutch architecture and its wonderful French vineyards, and also (in my very own opinion) a Californian “je ne sais quoi” (think Carmel-by-the-sea and Monterey).

June 22nd, 2018 update : Meraki has opened a sister café in Downtown Capetown at 86 Dorp street.

Open in 2012 and voted best Coffee Shop in the Western Cape area in 2016 and 2017, Meraki is one of the prettiest cafés I have been to (and I live in Paris !). The decoration is feminine, pale pink and white, classy and chic. The place is not big and I understand from the few reviews I have read that it can get noisy sometimes, especially when it is packed with students from the University close-by. The menu offers locally sourced coffee, sweet or savory breakfasts (eggs benedict and shakshouka are a must), freshly baked pastries, salads, wraps, sandwiches and some specials for lunch, and of course afternoon snacks. They also make “cruffins” (a hybrid between croissants and muffins), which recipe you can watch in this video.

The word Meraki (in greek) means to do something with love, creativity, passion, and soul.  From the experience I had, I could not agree more. We had a lovely late breakfast (our second of the day, actually 🙂 ) at Meraki, the service was friendly and efficient and the food of very good quality. We ordered cappuccino and pastries (the coconut cake on the picture was to-die-for) and we enjoyed them on the lovely terrace, on a communal table with bar stools if I remember well. The weather was fantastic and it was a treat for us, western Europeans, to be able to eat outdoors in December. Contrarily to the reviews I mentioned above, the place was very quiet at that time of the day (around 11 am).
