In August 2017, we spent 3 weeks in the Greek islands. While we loved staying in charming little hotels, the idea of experimenting with something different clearly became exciting. There is always a moment during your holidays when you get tired of eating in restaurants (or at your hotel’s buffet) twice a day. Don’t misunderstand me, I love to eat out, but it has to remain something enjoyable, not something you HAVE to do. This is why we decided to rent a villa in Sifnos. As crazy as it may sound, we couldn’t wait to go to the grocery shop and make our own meals!
After 4 glorious nights at Verina Astra, we changed location and moved to Vathy, a beautiful little harbor located 15 minutes by car from Appolonia, the main town. This is the place for an authentic experience: no trendy restaurants here, only traditional tavernas with delicious food. Our rental villa was located a few steps from what is, in my humble opinion, the best sandy beach on the island.
Our villa in Vathy was just perfect for a family of 4 with 2 bedrooms/2 bathrooms, a fully-equipped kitchen, a living room and a patio. No pool, but who needs it when you are a few steps from the beach?
We lived like locals, did grocery shopping at the tiny local supermarket, prepared our own meals (apart from a few lunches at the local tavernas) and had sunset drinks on our beautiful patio. The photo below shows our homemade breakfast. We made the fruit salads but we had someone deliver fresh bread and pastries in a basket every morning. It was one of the services included in the rental. We also found, upon arrival, a full fridge with milk, orange juice, butter, eggs, etc.
